Digital Device Expectations & Headphone Use Guidelines 2026
These expectations have been prepared in response to feedback from our 2025 parent, staff and student surveys.
As part of our ongoing commitment to fostering responsible, balanced and effective use of technology at school, we have updated our Digital Device Expectations and Headphone Use Guidelines for 2026. These changes reflect strong themes from community feedback and aim to support student wellbeing, reduce distraction, and create greater consistency across all learning areas.
Digital Device Expectations
To ensure break times are positive, active and screen-free, and to support consistent digital practice in classes, the following expectations apply:
- No laptop use during interval or lunch, unless students are completing school work in the library.
- Cell phones must remain in lockers or school bags at all times. They should not be kept in blazer pockets.
- All Learning Areas are now using Digital Engagement Guidelines to ensure clarity and consistency in how devices are used for learning.
- Students are encouraged to be active during breaks. New outdoor equipment and Katherine Mansfield Park activities are available to support this.
- Duty staff will monitor and reinforce these expectations throughout the school day.
Consequence for incorrect device use:
- Lunchtime detention
Headphone Use Guidelines
To promote focused, calm learning environments and reduce distractions, headphone use has been further clarified:
Permitted Use
- Eligible students who have been issued a pass by the Wellbeing Team or Learning Enrichment (LE) Coordinator
- Year 13 students, and only during their independent study sessions
Not Permitted
- During Year 11–12 supervised or independent study, unless the student has an eligibility pass
- During class or study times for students who do not meet the eligibility criteria
Consequence for incorrect headphone use:
- Lunchtime detention
Working Together with Parents
We appreciate the support of parents in helping students develop healthy digital habits, ones that promote wellbeing, maximise learning, and maintain positive relationships. These expectations will be actively reinforced by staff, and we will continue to monitor their effectiveness throughout the year.
If you would like to discuss these expectations further, please contact your student's dean.
