IB Diploma

Queen Margaret College is authorised to deliver the International Baccalaureate Diploma and will teach this programme to Year 12 from 2010 and Year 13 from 2011. The IB Diploma programme educates both the minds and the hearts of the students, who are enriched by a rigorous academic programme which enables them to gain acceptance at universities worldwide. Concurrent with this, students become citizens of the world - appreciating and practising international-mindedness. The programme is currently taught in 2400 schools throughout the world.

What is in the curriculum?

The curriculum contains six subject groups together with a core made up of three separate parts.

This is illustrated by a hexagon with the three parts of the core at its centre.

Students study six subjects selected from the subject groups. Normally three subjects are studied at higher level (courses representing 240 teaching hours), and the remaining three subjects are studied at standard level (courses representing 150 teaching hours).
All three parts of the core-extended essay, theory of knowledge and creativity, action, service-are compulsory and are central to the philosophy of the Diploma Programme.

Several studies have shown that IB students are extremely successful at university because they are well-educated, mature, highly-organised and, above all, independent thinkers. Such is the attractiveness of this programme, that the pass rate in Australasia is 90%-95%.
